The first thing you notice about Cathedral Caverns is the massive entrance. The huge opening measures 126 feet wide and 25 feet high. And it gets even better. Inside the cavern, you will find Big Rock Canyon, Mystery River and some of the most beautiful formations Mother Nature has ever created. Among them, you will see Stalagmite Mountain, The Frozen Waterfall and Goliath, a huge stalagmite column that reaches the ceiling of the cave some 45 feet above!
Cathedral Caverns State Park is an Alabama state park located in northern Marshall County 7 miles southeast of the town of Woodville. The cave is located in Kennamer Cove, approximately 5 miles northeast of Grant. In addition to cave tours, the state park offers gem mining, picnicking, and tent camping. This cave is located in the northern corner of Alabama's Marshall County.
The cave system has laid claim to several world records though their accuracy has been disputed. Among the caverns' notable features are:
Wild Cave Tour
Formerly inaccessible areas beyond the paved walkway are now open as part of the "Wild Cave Tour."
Cathedral Caverns State Park’s Backcountry Campsite is a one-of-a-kind camping experience, for those that prefer a camping site with a more rustic view of nature. To reach this site you must carry in your supplies over a distance of a couple of miles.
Beech Camp Backcountry Campsite: - This is a strenuous, uphill hike to the campsite.
In 1983, principal photography for the 1984 horror film Secrets of the Phantom Caverns took place in the caverns. In 1995, Cathedral Caverns provided the cave settings for the Disney Studios film Tom and Huck.
