Anchorage Alaska Mormon Temple
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
BYU Cougar Sports
- Northernmost Mormon Temple
The Anchorage Alaska Temple is the 54th Operating Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and only Mormon Temple constructed in Alaska. It was dedicated on 09 Jan 1999 by President Gordon B Hinckley.
This temple is one of the original three small format temples announced in General Conference in Oct 1997. Before then, Latter-day Saints had to travel over 1000 miles to reach either the Seattle Washington Temple or Carlston Alberta Temple.
This temple features stone-clad Sierra white granite from Fresno, California. It stands near the famous Seward Highway with a beautiful grove of trees and a backdrop of the magestic Chugach Mountains.
From the outside the upper temple windows radiate a bright glow that originates with the giant 700-pound Celestial Room chandelier consisting of thousands of Hungarian crystals and 140 lights. The main temple exterior wall features a diorama of the Big Dipper Constellation.
The words Holiness to the Lord—The House of the Lord are inscribed in three different locations on the Anchorage Alaska Temple: (1) on the east side of the temple on the exterior wall of the Celestial Room, (2) on the base of the spire near the original entrance to the temple, and (3) directly over the doors of the new entrance.
Just five years after its dedication, the Anchorage Alaska Temple was rededicated after an expansion project that nearly doubled the building's square footage. The renovation included the addition of a second ordinance room, offices for temple staff, new men's and women's dressing rooms, a patron waiting room, a laundry facility, and an elevator.
