U.S. Highway 66 was the first all-weather road linking Chicago to Los Angeles, receiving its official designation on November 11, 1926. It is the shortest year-round route between the two cities, covering 2,300 miles. This highway has been often romanticized in both print and film over the many years since. By the late 20th century it's route crossing Northern Arizona has been entirely replaced by Interstate-40 and is quickly disappearing.
But today it is finding a new life as a transnational bike trail Many states have posted "Historic Route 66" signs to help you find it.
We DO NOT recommend trying the Eastern Arizona route which has you riding the shoulder of the busy interstate (although it is legal to do so.) Instead we will point your attention the Seligman Cutoff with a frontage road following the interstate westward from Flagstaff, turns northward at Seligman and loops down thru Kingman and then over to Needles.
