A popular recreation destination in Scottsdale is the Scottsdale Hills Recreation Area. It is located 7 miles south of downtown Scottsdale on State Route 85 (at mile marker 144). It contains camping, picnic areas, hiking trails, and a shooting range. The recreation area is part of the Maricopa County Regional Park program, while the shooting range is managed by the Scottsdale Sportsman Club.

Scottsdale was named for Civil War veteran Chaplin Winfield Scott, who purchased farmland here in 1888. Today it is home to over 100 art galleries, crafts stores, specialty shops, golf courses and resorts.
