Aspen dates back to the era of the silver mines of the late 1800's. In 1893 (the height of the silver rush) a 1,840-pound, 93-percent pure silver nugget was pulled from the nearby Smuggler Mine. Afterwards many area towns suffered an economic collapse. Several prominent ghost towns can be found nearby.

In the late 1930's a simple ski area was built and the town started to come back to life as a tourism destination.

The restored 1889 Wheeler Opera House presents operas, dramas, concerts and dance throughout the year.

Ski resort community founded in 1967, just 10 miles west of Aspen on SR-82 in the Roaring Fork Valley. The ski runs are located across from Snowmass Mountain on Baldy and Burnt mountains, in the White River National Forest.

Ashcroft
Ghost town located 12 miles south of Aspen on Castle Creek Rd. The lack of rail service contributed to the town's demise in the 1890's.

Independence
Ghost town located 15 miles east of Aspen on SR-82. Original mining camp of the Roaring Fork Valley, the town boomed after the first gold strike in 1879. However, the town didn't last past the turn of the century.
