Region Overview

The Dominican Republic (pop. 8 million) covers the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, second largest island in the Caribbean. On the west is the country of Haiti, Across the Mona Channel to the east is Puerto Rico.

This 30,000 square mile country includes 500 year old stone palaces as well as Pico Duarte, at 10,700 feet it is the highest mountain in the Caribbean.

The capital is Santo Domingo. Spanish and English are both widely spoken.

    Tour Santo Domingo

    This seaside capital claims to be the old city in the new world. 16th century forts and modern high-rise hotels are both found here. The major historical attractions are found in Colonial City

    Visit El Malecon - major waterfront thoroughfare filled with highrise hotels, restaurants, discos, shops, outdoor cafes. This popular boulevard is the center of the city's nightlife.

    Also noteworthy is the Plaza de la Cultura. Find here the Museum of the Dominican Man, Natural History Museum, National Library, Museum of Modern Art and National Theater set in a beautiful park.

    • Columbus Memorial Lighthouse - Built in 1992 to celebrate his 500th anniversary in the new world, this is the current resting place of the famous explorer Christopher Columbus.
    • Tres Ojos de Agua - three amazing underwater lagoons.

    Tour Colonial City

    Historic District of Santo Domingo with a history dating back almost 500 years.

    • Calle de las Damas - "Street of the Ladies" - Main thoroughfare and first stone laid street of the New World and lined with many historic sites.
    • Ozama Fortress - 16th century Spanish military complex.
    • Ovando House - Home of the founder of Santo Domingo - Fray Nicolas de Ovando.
    • House of Gargoyles - Converted into museum housing the Institure of Hispanic Culture.
    • Museum of the Royal Houses - Restored 16th century colonial government headquarters.
    • Alcazar de Colon - great palace of the heir of Christopher Columbus.
    • Cathedral Santa Maria la Menor - Inaugurated 1542 and resting place of Christopher Columbus for over 500 years.
