Region Overview

The Big Island of Hawaii is the largest and southern most of the Hawaiian Island Chain. It is formed by five volcanoes - Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, Kilauea, Kohala and Hualalai. Kilauea has been the most active in the last dozen years and is at the heart of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Lava venting from its dome travels over 4,000 ft downhill the sea.

This island is the southernmost point in the United States.
