In July 1862, The small community of Crab Orchard, Lincoln County, Kentucky, was in the midst of a tug of war between Confederate and Union forces. Local Union troops strugled with, Confederate General John Hunt Morgan’s Cavalry, the First Kentucky, which burns the Dix River Bridge near the town and sets fire nearby to some 120 Union wagons.
Meanwhile, the Crab Orchard Baptist Church is used as a Union hospital, and remains so for much of the war. The pews had been removed to make room for sick and wounded soldiers. During the war, several Union soldiers who die of measles are buried in the church cemetery.

Crab Orchard Eagle Project
Nov-2013: Eagle Scout Candidate, Dakota Martin (of Boy Scout Troop 148), coordinated restoration of the Crab Orchard Cemetery, which included the graves of many prominent figures buried there from the Civil War battles of 1862.
To complete his seven-plus years in the Boy Scouts, Martin decided to tackle a unique problem — deteriorating Civil War graves in the Crab Orchard Cemetery. “These graves were slowly decomposing. One was so bad we literally had to put it back together.” Martin said. “They were just falling into ruins. Somebody had to do something or they would be forgotten forever."
For two months, Martin worked in the cemetery with family members and fellow scouting community members to restore many graves that had fallen apart or sunken into the ground. Martin got the idea for the cleanup from Lincoln County Property Valuation Administrator David Gambrel, who also collaborated with Martin to assemble a one-hour, self-guided audio tour of graves from the Civil War era.
