Empire State Building
When completed in 1931 the Empire State Building was the tallest bulding in the world for over 40 years (today it ranks seventh). This Art Deco building soars 1,454 feet straight up and has 2 million square feet of office space, where over 20,000 people come to work each day. The building is made of Indiana limestone and granite trimmed with sparkling stainless steel.
Elevators run to the observatory on the 86th floor and to another circular glass-enclosed observation tower on the 102nd floor where visitors can see upto 50 miles on a clear day. However this is a very popular landmark, be prepared for long lines.
The building itself has been featured in over 100 movies, including its most famous role in the 1933 King Kong. In 1945, an US Air Force B-25 bomber crashed into the 78th and 79th floors without harming the structural integrity of the building.
Original art exhibits in the lobby depict the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World plus the Eighth Wonder of the Modern World, the Empire State Building. The top thirty floors are lit each night in festive seasonal colors throughout the year.
The best times to visit is either in the early morning when it is less crowded or at night when the city lights put on a dazzling display.
