    The ability to make beautiful music is a remarkable talent. Music Merit Badge can help scouts learn about this subject.

    Sample Activity Plan


    Music Merit Badge A) Make Your Plan
    The Trail to Adventure Fun!

      1. Merit Badge Activity Preview

      2. Sample Plan Outline
      Note: This Plan is a Draft - Some dates, events and activities may change after reviewing it with your leaders.

      • Make draft of Event Flyer (See Example Here).
      • Each Participant to be notified that he needs:
      • Event Dates / Places / Dress Code / Supplies / Etc.
      • Extra Credit)

      3. Meet the Merit Badge Counselor
      Review your plan with the merit badge counselor. Some activities require his advance approval. The Scoutmaster should be able to recommend a counselor to you.

      4. Patrol Leader Council
      Present Activity Proposal to your fellow patrol leaders and scoutmaster. Make assignments as needed.

      5. Field Activity Plan

      • Contact the destination venue. Confirm that they can assist with the Field Trip Requirements. Reserve your Event Dates.
      • Troop Historian should be ready to take pictures on this activity to report back on the next troop blog, newsletter or court of honor.

      6. Announce & Start Activity

      • Get final approval from your scoutmaster.
      • Update event flyer (#2) above.
      • Distribute event flyer / Begin Introduction


    B) Introduction
    Present the plan to your patrol or troop (Either at your first activity meeting or sometime earlier.)

    Here are some ideas to show why this activity will be both fun and important.

    Home garden projects help families build unity, teach scouts about hard work, adds to family self-sufficiency, saves on their budget, and teaches about health. A garden reminds us of the beauties of this world that God has created for us, and it can give us hours of instruction and pleasure as we witness the miracle of growth.

    Music Merit Badge C) Study Hall

    Purpose: Help each Patrol Member learn key concepts on this subject. Include the following resources:

      Req #1: Perform Music


        Sing or play a simple song or hymn chosen by your counselor, using good technique, phrasing, tone, rhythm, and dynamics. Read all the signs and terms of the score.

      Req #2: Making Music

        Name the five general groups of musical instruments. Create an illustration that shows how tones are generated and how instruments produce sound.

      Req #5: Intellectual Property

        Define for your counselor intellectual property (IP). Explain how to properly obtain and share recorded music.


    Music Merit Badge D) Music Activities

      Req #3: Live Performance

        Do TWO of the following:

          a. Attend a live performance, or listen to three hours of recordings from any two of the following musical styles: blues, jazz, classical, country, bluegrass, ethnic, gospel, musical theater, opera. Describe the sound of the music and the instruments used. Identify the composers or songwriters, the performers, and the titles of the pieces you heard. If it was a live performance, describe the setting and the reaction of the audience. Discuss your thoughts about the music.
          b. Interview an adult member of your family about music. Find out what the most popular music was when he or she was your age. Find out what his or her favorite music is now, and listen to three of your relative’s favorite tunes with him or her. How do those favorites sound to you? Had you ever heard any of them? Play three of your favorite songs for your relative, and explain why you like these songs. Ask what he or she thinks of your favorite music.
          c. Serve for six months as a member of a school band, choir, or other organized musical group, or perform as a soloist in public six times.
          d. List five people who are important in the history of American music and explain to your counselor why they continue to be influential. Include at least one composer, one performer, one innovator, and one person born more than 100 years ago.

      Req #4: Making Music

        Do ONE of the following:

          a. Teach three songs to a group of people. Lead them in singing the songs, using proper hand motions.
          b. Compose and write the score for a piece of music of 12 measures or more, and play this music on an instrument.
          c. Make a traditional instrument and learn to play it.


    F) Merit Badge Final


    H) Extra Credit

    Never add to or take away from the stated merit badge requirements. The material presented below is intended only to add fun for the patrol by way of either activity or community service.

      Court of Honor Concert
      At one time the Roadkill Patrol consisted of a number of scouts were also part of the local school band. These musicians brought their instruments and performed a couple of their favorite band tunes for the Troop Court of Honor.

      The Bugling merit badge was one of the original 57 merit badges issued by the Boy Scouts of America in 1911. Bugling is an extremely rare merit badge with only 684 earned in 2007!
