Elko is an old wagon train way station that straddles highway I-80 (which follows the old Bidwell, Donner and Fremont pioneer trails). Today is a commercial center for Nevada's cattle country.

Cowboy Poetry Festival [Late Jan - Early Feb]
First such annual event held in the nation. It is dedicated to preserving cowboy culture through music, tall tales, dance, poetry, and various exhibits.
