Great Basin National Park

Located in one of the remotest and least populated parts of the country. Great Basin N.P. is a 77,100 acre preserve set aside in 1986. This small plot has a very diverse landscape including limestone caves, tall peaks, aspen forests, glacial lakes and alpine meadows. Here stands Bristlecone Pines, which at 4,000 years old are some of the oldest living things on earth.

Nearest hotel lodging is 60 miles west at Ely, NV.

Visitor Center
Old facility includes wall maps, introductory film, historic displays and an on-duty ranger to answer your questions. There is also a gift shop here with old-fashioned soda fountain and local crafts.

Lehman Caves
One of the largest limestone caverns in the west. A guided tour starts at the Visitor Center and takes 1.5 hours to descend 2/3 of a mile underground. You'll see a wide range in types and color of underground formations. Temperature in the cave usually stays at about 50 degrees. Special formations include:

Wheeler Park Scenic Drive
12-mile loop with a steep climb 10,000 feet up Mount Wheeler - at 13,063 feet it is the highest point in the Great Basin region.
