Adventures of the Sierra Nevadas

In 1870 Virginia City was the mining metropolis of the west. This boomtown had at is heyday over 35,000 residents with banks, churches, theaters, 110 saloons and the only elevator between San Francisco and Chicago. Much has been done to restore the town to its 1870 splendor.

Silver ore of the famous Comstock Lode, located directly underground provided its prosperity and financed the Union Army in the Civil War and built San Francisco. The gross value of the total ore extracted is said to be at least $234 million.

Noteworthy town residents included Mark Twain and Bret Harte who were employed as reporters for the local paper, Territorial Enterprise.

Mackay Mansion

1860 building was originally the headquarters for Gould and Curry Mine Co. and later principal residence for silver king John Mackay. Exhibits includes Mrs. Mackay's Tiffany silver collection, furnishings, old Chinese laundry, and more.

Piper's Opera House

Many famous performers of the late-19th century passed through here to entertain the silver bonanza kings of the Comstock Lode. Includes many original stage settings and equipment, suspended balcony, museum of playbills and posters and other theater memorabilia.

Virginia and Truckee Railroad

Working steam train operates a 35-minute round trip departing from the Washington and F St station. Partially restored standard gauge railroad.
