St. John's (pop: 181,300) is the provincial capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada and located on the eastern tip of the Avalon Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland. The city enjoys a long and vibrant history as the oldest English-founded city in North America. The harbour was a frequent haven for European fisherman throughout the early 1500s, and was officially established as a community when Sir Humphrey Gilbert declared Newfoundland an English colony in 1583. Home to The Provincial Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador. For many years, the principle industry here was fishing, but that has changed with the recent discovery of offshore oil fields. |
