Tour New Mexico / Scout Camps /
Since 1939, the Boy Scouts of America have operated a large outdoor high adventure base on this large, rugged, mountain ranch (137,500 acres) located near the town of Cimarron, New Mexico. It covers a wide stretch of wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of the Rocky Mountains of northern New Mexico.
Unlike most scout camps, that are run by local scout councils and target younger scouts, this one is owned and operated by the BSA National Organization. It hosts a wide range of wilderness backpacking trek routes that older scouts seek after.
Philmont Trek Awards
Formerly the property of oil baron Waite Phillips, this scout ranch is a National BSA High Adventure Base in which crews of Scouts and Venturers take part in backpacking expeditions and other outdoor activities. It is the largest youth camp in the world in land area. Between June 8 and August 22 around 23,000 Scouts and adult leaders backpack across the Ranch's extensive backcountry while over 1,250 seasonal staff personnel maintain the Ranch's summer operations.
Philmont is also home to the Philmont Training Center and the Seton Museum. The Training Center is the primary location for BSA's national volunteer training programs. Philmont is also operated as a ranch, maintaining small herds of cattle, horses, burros and bison.
The only documented Tyrannosaurus rex track in the world was discovered within the camp's boundaries in 1993. It was formally identified in 1994 in North Ponil Canyon by the Anasazi Trail Camp.
Philmont Winter Wilderness Treks
Cold-weather camping is the ultimate test of your ability to camp and travel in the backcountry and learn to live in harmony with the environment. Training in winter camping will prepare you to safely enjoy many winter adventures and to teach others to enjoy these unique experiences.
Philmont Scout Museum
Adjacent to the Ranch Headquarters it the Philmont Museum Complex, that host a collection of exhibits and artwork dedicated to Ernest Thompson Seton (1860-1946). He was an artist, naturalist, environmentalist, explorer, the founder of the Woodcraft League and Co-founder of the Boy Scouts of America. The Villa Philmont is a historic Spanish Mediterranean ranch home constructed in the early 1900s before the property was transferred to the Boy Scouts.
