    Tour Taos
    Located at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Taos gained much fame for being the home of the unique Taos Society of Artists.     Many visitors come in the summer for hiking or biking the nearby mountain ranges, or to see the brilliant colors during the autumn. Nearby is Taos Ski Valley which beckons during the winter months.

    Taos actually consists of three distinct villages:

    • Don Fernando de Taos - Original Spanish settlement that today is a center for tourism and the arts.
    • Pueblo de Taos - retains much of the pre-European culture of the Taos Indians. Also next to Mission San Geronimo ruins.
    • Ranchos de Taos - farming cummunity that is home to one of New Mexico's most scenic mission church.

    Key Points of Interest:

      Picuris Pueblo
      Indian pueblo built 1250-1300 and the scene of revolts during the late 17th century.

      Rio Grande Gorge
      Eight miles north of Taos on US-64 is one of the highest highway bridges in the nation. This triple-span, continuous-truss bridge rises 650 feet above the river. Observation platforms offer incredible views of the countryside here.

      Fort Burgwin
      Old western fort of the 1st Dragoons of the U.S. Cavalry were stationed here 1852-1860. Today it serves as the Fort Burgwin Research Center of Southern Methodist University (SMU).

      Ernest L. Blumenschein Home
      222 Ledoux St.; Open Daily 9-5; (505) 758-0505.
      Located two blocks west of historic Taos Plaza. Portions of the adobe home were built in 1790 and was at one time home to a co-founder of the original Taos Society of Artists.

      Fechin House and Studio
      227 Paseo del Pueblo Norte; Open Tues-Sat 10-5;(505) 758-1710;
      Institute, studio and home (1928-55) of famous Russian born artist, Nicolai Fechin. Interior adorned with many intricate carvings and exhibits.

      The Harwood Foundation
      238 Ledoux St; Open Mon-Fri 9-Noon; (505) 758-9826;
      Collections of paintings, sculpture and Hispanic religious art. Established 1923.

      Kit Carson State Park
      Free Admission. Open Daily 8-5; (505) 758-4160:
      Located two blocks north of Taos Plaza. Park includes cemetary that is final resting place for Kit Carson, Padre Martinez and other historic figures.

      Martinez Hacienda
      708 Hacienda Rd; Open Daily 9AM-5PM; Admission $4; (505) 758-1000;
      Located two miles west of Taos Plaza. Large 21-room fortress-like home built in 1804 by Padre Antonio Severino Martinez, early merchant and mayor of Taos. Living history demonstrations presented regularly.

      Millicent Rogers Museum
      1504 Millicent Rogers Rd. Open Daily 10-5; Admission $4; (505) 758-2462;
      Adobe home located four miles north of Taos Plaza on US-64. Includes art, culture and historical displays about the SouthWest. See textiles, jewelry, pottery and kachina dolls from the Navajo, Pueblo, Zuni and Hopi indians.

      San Francisco de Asis Church
      Open Mon-Sat 9-4; (505) 758-2754;
      Located 4 miles south of Taos on SR-68, this is one of the best of Southwest Spanish church designs. Built 1710-55, 120 feet long and heavily buttressed. Adorned inside with religious art, sculptures and a pictorial reredos daating to the its early days. Also look for artist Henri Ault's painting of "The Shadow of the Cross" in the rectory which has optical illusions making the cross disappear.

    Carson National Forest
    Some of the finest mountain scenery in the Southwest is found in the 1.5 million acres covered by the Carson National Forest. Elevations rise from 6,000 feet to 13,161 feet at Wheeler Peak, the highest in New Mexico.

    Picuris Pueblo

      Located 7 miles northwest of Penasco off SR-75. Indian pueblo built 1250-1300 and the scene of revolts during the late 17th century. Musuem is open free displaying artifacts excavated from the pueblo area.

      Mission of San Lorenzo -was erected after the 1692 reconquest by the Spanish and used for over two centuries following.

      Saint Lawrence Fiesta - Held Aug 9-10.


    Pueblo de Taos

      Twin five-story terraced communal buildings surrounded by various adobe structures portray pre-historic indian culture. Tallest indian pueblo of the Southwest. Electricity and running water are banned. See below for Pueblo Events.

      Notice: Taos Pueblo can close to the public without advance notice for hosting local funerals and other ceremonies. Photography may not be permitted on certain days or near ceremonial dances. Private homes are strictly off limits.

      Ruins of the Mission San Geronimo de Taos
      Located near Pueblo entrance. Some portions of massive walls and bell tower are still standing. Built 1598 and burned by Pueblo indians during 1680 rebellion. Restored again in 1705 only to be finally destroyed in 1847 by U.S. troops suppressing revolts.
