Originally constructed in the early 17th century as Spain's seat of government for what is today the American Southwest, the Palace of the Governors chronicles the history of Santa Fe, as well as New Mexico and the region. This adobe structure, now the state's history museum, was designated a Registered National Historic Landmark in 1960 and an American Treasure in 1999.

The Palace of the Governors (1610) is an adobe structure on the Plaza of Santa Fe, New Mexico which served as the seat of government in New Mexico for centuries. The Palace of the Governors is the oldest continuously occupied public building in the United States.

Today this historical landmark, The Palace of the Governors building, will continue as an exhibition facility, however, plans for future exhibitions within the structure focus on interpreting the Palace of the Governors building itself and the activities that took place within it.

The City of Santa Fe was originally occupied by a number of Pueblo Indian villages with founding dates between 1050 to 1150. Santa Fe was the capital of Nuevo México, a province of New Spain explored by Francisco Vásquez de Coronado and established in 1515.

Most tourist activity takes place in the historic downtown, especially on and around the Plaza, a one-block square adjacent to the Palace of the Governors, the original seat of New Mexico's territorial government since the time of Spanish colonization.
