Region Overview

Sacramento is the state capital of California and a major transportation hub. In 1963 in became a major inland port with the completion of a deep water channel to San Francisco Bay.

Because of its central location in the very fertile San Joaquin Valley, Agriculture, as the backbone to the local ecomony, has assured continual prosperity for the region. Nearby high-tech industries and military facilities have also contributed greatly.

Much of the early history is preserved in the historical sites and landmarks of Old Sacramento. This section also has a profile on the History of Sacramento.

Tour State Capitol

The state capitol was built 1860-74. It includes a big glass dome that rises 210 feet high. Public areas include major historical and art exhibits in the restored main building and chambers and basement.

The parkland surrounding the capitol is a collection of trees and flora from around the world.

Tour William Land Park

This 600 acre park is located on the south side of Sacramento, bounded by Freeport Blvd, Riverside Blvd, 13th Ave and Sutterville Rd.

Tour Sutter's Fort

27th and L Sts; 445-4422; Open Daily 10-5;

First European outpost built 1839 in the California interior by Swiss immigrant Capt. John Sutter. The restored adobe fort has artifacts from pioneer and gold rush days.
