Covers a 55 mile stretch of barrier islands from Ocracoke Inlet in the north to Beaufort Inlet in the south. Includes Portsmouth Island, Core Banks, and Shackleford Banks.

Fort Raleigh National Historic Site
Covers 143 acres on Roanoke Island, about 3 miles north of Manteo. Site of 1585 attempt by Sir Walter Raleigh to start first English colony in the Eastern U.S. Colony was abandoned in less than a year. A second colony was established in 1587 but had mysteriously disappeared when a supply ship returned in 1590. This place then gained fame as the "Lost Colony".
