Tour Camp Mataguay [SDIC]
Aviation Merit Badge Program
BSA San Diego-Imperial Council
Besides camping, hiking, and general outdoor fun, there are countless things to do at Mataguay during the year. Programs which are available include archery, swimming at the pool, boating at the lake, .22 rifle, black powder (muzzle loading) rifle, shot gun, and BB gun shooting. For older Scouts C.O.P.E. and Climbing/Rappelling are available. These programs can be tailored to meet your unit's goals from pleasure use to merit badge, advancement, and other special camp programs. Units can provide their own lifeguards and range masters, or these can be arranged through the Ranch Director.
Mataguay Scout Ranch, an 840 acre property owned and operated by San Diego-Imperial Council, is a great destination for your SUMMER CAMP and for year round camping. Open to all Scouting units and other non-Scout organizations. This includes Packs, Dens, Troops, Teams, Crews, church groups, clubs, and associations. Many of the camp's facilities are available for your unit's program. These include lodges, cabins, and administration buildings that you can use for unit training, center of operations, or just as a getaway spot. All campsites at Mataguay have KYBO's (latrines), running water, and campfire rings. There are also several large campfire rings on the reservation if you wish to put on a large program in the evening. On the grounds of the ranch itself, there are numerous hiking trails and areas to be explored. For those who are looking for more challenging trails, there is the Mataguay Pacific Crest Connector Trail, or a seven mile trail into camp from Barrel Springs. There certainly is enough room for a group of any size.
Aviation Merit Badge
Camp Mataguay is the only scout camp on the west coast to feature glider rides and the complete Aviation Merit Badge program. They have partnered with a major glider plane operation based just a few miles away at the Warner Springs Glider Port.
Glider rides are included as part of the summer camp program for Aviation Merit Badge. Many scout troops come here from out-of-state just to utilize this program. Additionally, your group can stay at Mataguay and contact the glider company directly (Sky Sailing) to arrange your own aviation high adventure any time of the year while camping out at Mataguay. See below for contact info. Extra fees and permission slip apply.
For thousands of years humanity dreamt of flying, looking to the skies to find an answer. History shows us the long road from those first dreams to the wonder that is modern flight. The first tested and perfected flights were made in crafts designed to glide on the air currents, like a bird. The exhilarating feeling, and amazing views offered by Soaring over the ground, are a wonder we can now appreciate.
As Southern California’s Premier Sailplane destination, Sky Sailing offers rides of one or two passengers, instruction in the art of Soaring, and a place for the Glider community to meet and practice their sport. Soaring is the flight of a sailplane or glider, by using the energy produced by gliding along on the air-currents, much like a powered airplane. Learning to soar in a sailplane is the best way to begin to learn to fly.
