Catalina Island is located 22 miles off the coast of Southern California
near Long Beach. Ths island is 21 miles long and about 8 miles wide.
avalon is the principal town and main
ferry terminus. Discovered in 1542 by Juan Rodriguez
Cabrillo and later used for smuggling and piracy. Today it is a major
resort and sportsfishing paradise.
Some activities that you can enjoy on the island include golf, deep sea fishing, glass bottom boats, world-class diving parks,
snorkeling, biking, hiking, swimming, shopping, horseback riding, buffalo watching and so much more.
Catalina Island Buffalo
One of the oddities of the island is tracking a herd of some 300 bison that are not native
to the island. They were brought over in the early 1920's as backdrop for a movie (and their
scene was cut from the final edition).

Tour Avalon
This is the main port and ferry destination for the island. Avalon was
founded in 1887 by George Shatto.

Buffalo Run Half Marathon - Catalina Island [FEB]
Very challenging, hilly course on the East End of Catalina Island. Approximate 8 mile climb in dirt fire roads until the descent back into Avalon.
This half marathon course takes you from sea level to a 1600 foot elevation then returns to sea level. Spectacular views of San Clemente Island and Avalon.
This race also features the popular flat and fast Pebbly Beach 5K course on the paved road out to Pebbly Beach.

Runners World 2007 ranked this race as the #1 off-road marathon in the world.
Enjoy some of the most breathtaking scenery while running 26.2 miles over the Island of Catalina.
The race traverses mostly dirt trails and roads through areas of the interior of the Island where very few have gone. The race starts in Two Harbors and runs to Avalon.

California Coastal National Monument
Established in 2000, the California Coastal National Monument runs the entire length of the
California coast (1,100 miles) between Oregon and Mexico, extends 12 nautical miles from the shoreline, and encompasses
thousands of BLM administered islands, rocks, exposed reefs, and pinnacles above mean high tide.
These provide forage and breeding grounds for significant populations of coastal birds and sea mammals.
Catalina Classic Paddleboard Race - [AUG]
32-mile race from Catalina Island to Manhattan Beach Pier
The Catalina Classic dates back to 1955 and is recognized as the king of long distance paddleboard races.
The race begins at the west end of the island, at Two Harbors on the Isthmus, and stretches toward the shore at Palos Verdes,
making a left turn off the coast there and ending at the Manhattan Beach Pier.
