The first explorers arrived in 1769 and in 1798 the San Luis Rey mission was built.
In 1841, the Mexican government granted major land grants for the area.
When the California Southern Railway, a branch of the Santa Fe, began constructing a railway linking San Diego with San Bernardino.
Completed in 1883, the railway opened the beach area of San Diego County for development and the real history of Oceanside began.
In 1942, a large area to the north was used to create a training base for the Marine Corps.

Legoland California
Legoland is the first park of its kind to be built in the USA.
Designed primarily to give a fun educational play experience to young children ages 2-12.

Mission San Luis Rey de Francia - Oceanside CA
Known as the "King of Missions" - Mission San Luis Rey is the
largest of the California missions and a national landmark. Franciscan friars at the mission
conduct regular tours. This church still holds regular worship services and hosts special
functions during the week.
Oceanside Pier
One of the longest piers on the west coast -
very popular for fishing and there is a Ruby's Restaurant on the end.
At the base of the pier is a bandshell which is the site of special concert events.

World Body Surfing Championships [AUG] By Oceanside Pier
Labor Day Pier Swim - Annual event since 1930, over 400 swimmers hit the water for
a 1-mile swim race out and around the pier.

Oceanside Harbor Days [Mid-Sept]
Two days of sun, sand, and surf provide an outstanding adventure opportunity including the
Mayor's cup regatta, fishing derby and bathtub derby where spectators watch amateur sailors
sink or swim in this contest which pits brain against brawn as teams build and navigate a seaworthy craft around a short, but treacherous course.
World Bodysurfing Championship - Oceanside CA [Late Aug]
Approximately 350-400 bodysurfers from around the world compete in their respective age divisions for trophies and prizes.
The Men and Women's Grand Champions will be crowned on Sunday afternoon.
Vendor sponsors will be featured with produst booths on the Strand during all three days of competition.

Guajome County Regional Park
Stradling the northern city boundaries of Oceanside and Vista is this moderate sized wilderness park.
Picnic grounds, camping, fishing, nature trails, horse trails
birdwatching in some of the most diverse habitat in San Diego County
which includes stream, pond, marsh and a small lake. Near the lake you can
see geese, ducks, rabbits, squirrels, and abundant evidence of other wildlife.
