Savoring sun, surf and romantic architecture makes this presidential retreat a hard place to leave.

This upscale town is located on hillsides overlooking the Pacific Ocean. San Clemente is known for its palm-fringed beaches and municipal pier. It became very famous as the west coast presidential retreat for U.S. President Richard Nixon.

Founded in 1925 of Ole Hanson, the former mayor of Seattle. The original buildings included Spanish Village and Casa Romantica, both are great examples of early Spanish architecture.

San Clemente has a 5-mile-long beach. Most popular is the portion next to the municpal pier. Another busy place is the train stop at the north end.

San Clemente City Beach

Old Spanish Village
Start of San Clemente in 1925, includes former city hall and antique shops.

Casa Romantica
Compound of town founder, Ole Hanson and designed by renowned architect Carl Lindbolm. The property offers outstanding views of Catalina Island, the pier and beach.

La Casa Pacifica
Onetime Western White House, purchased by Richard Nixon shortly after he became U.S. President. This house, designed by Casa Romantica architect Lindbolm, once belonged to early resident Hamilton H. Cotton. The blufftop home, now privately owned is shaded by Monterey Cypress and towering palms. While not open to the public, you can see it by walking 3 miles south down the beach from Municipal Pier.



San Clemente State Beach

Popular with surfers, this one-mile long beach strip also offers skin diving, swimming, body surfing and scenic bluff top nature hike trails.
