In the center of Pacific Beach, the San Diego College of Letters opened its doors in 1889 but later becoming the Hotel Balboa in 1904. In 1910 it transformed again into the San Diego Army-Navy Academy where it called itself the "West Point of the West," with over 500 students. Until finally being razed in 1958.

From both The Plunge and Giant Dipper you have great views of the Pacific Ocean only 300 feet away.

Golden sands wait just between the tides and the Ocean Front Boardwalk. Resorts and hotels dot the coastline amongst bike and board rental stores, beachfront dining (with views), and many green parks. On the sand the excitement of horseshoe games, beach beauties, dolphins in the waves, and surf competitions make for a classic endless summer.

Tourmaline Surfing Beach
A great place for surfing beginners with easy to ride swells (except during big winter storms). The break is usually soft and mushy but holds up well for a long time at takeoff, allowing surfers to paddle into almost any wave that has a hint of breaking, if they have the right sized board. Park includes a public parking lot and limited facilities. This area is heavily used by surfers and sailboarders year round.

Area North of Crystal Pier extends approximately one mile from the north end of the community of Pacific Beach to the south end of the community of La Jolla. This beach is bordered by cliffs up to 75 feet in height. A sidewalk traverses the cliff-top along much of the south end of the beach. In this area, parking is very limited. Directly to the north is Tourmaline.

The area south of Crystal Pier is known as Pacific Beach. This beach long beach, (locals call it The Strand) continues south for over two miles, becoming Mission Beach and then South Mission Beach. Directly adjacent to the residential and commercial areas of the Pacific Beach and Mission Beach communities. It is the most popular beach in the City of San Diego and draws large crowds in summer.

La Jolla Shores
One of the best scenic tours in all of San Diego takes you to a small hidden beach cove tucked in between sea cliffs and tide pools making it a frequent stopping place for visitors such as sea lions and harbor seals.
