Besides being famous for its fanciful gardens and architecture, this 300-year old city is the center of Southern gentility. The city's historic district has 2,000 buildings including 73 that predate the Revolutionary War.
Founded in 1670 by English settlers, Charles Town easily became a prosperous and fashionable Colonial city. Even today it still retains 18th- and 19th-century cobblestone streets. It was the site of a major victory against the British in 1776. In the Civil War it was famous for the firing of the first shot against Fort Sumter.
