This chain of small islands and reefs extend c.150 miles SW from Florida
in to the Florida Bay. The tip of the keys is c.90 miles
north of Cuba.
The Overseas Highway (US-1) makes commuting across the keys very easy.
Infact, this has to be one of the most scenic driving tours in all of Florida.
Drivers are surrounded by water all the way to the horizon on both sides of the road.
This 127 mile route uses 42 bridges to island hop for over 127 miles.
Travel along the route is measured by Mile Markers (MM) which many
local motels and restaurants use for their addresses. The highway starts
at MM127 south of Miami and ends in Key West at MM0.

Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary
The 2,800 square nautical mile Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) surrounds the
entire archipelago of the Florida Keys and includes the productive waters of Florida Bay, the Gulf of Mexico
and the Atlantic Ocean. Cultural resources are also contained within the sanctuary. The proximity of coral
reefs to centuries old shipping routes has resulted in a high concentration of shipwrecks and an abundance of artifacts.
The Sanctuary includes three major habitats - coral reef, mangroves and seagrasses.
Fort Zachary Taylor - Key West
Located off Southard St. is this Union Army fort that served
as a Civil War stronghold. Recent excavations have uncovered a
hidden arsenal. Largest collection of Civil War cannons.
Key West Aquarium - Mallory Square
The aquarium is exhibits marine life native to the Florida Key waters and
dates back to the early 1930's. The Aquarium features a wide variety of fish including grouper, moray eels, barracuda,
tropical fish, tarpon, sharks, parrotfish and much, much more. During your tour, you will even be able to
pet a live shark! Also see turtles and exotic birds.
Pennekamp Coral Reef - Key Largo
This state park preserves both land area and an extensive 178 nauticle miles of
undersea coral reef area. Park features include dive sites, boat tours, mangrove boardwalk,
aqarium and visitors center.
Crane Point Hammock - Marathon FL
Collection of historic sites, museums, childrens center, wildlife habitat and nature trails
and recreated 600-foot coral reef cave.

National Key Deer Refuge - Big Pine Key
8,500 acre preserve established in 1957 to protect the endangered Key Deer located mostly on Big Pine Key and No Name Key.
Refuge is home to the imperiled tropical hardwood hammock habitat and 22 federally listed endangered and threatened species
of plants and animals, five of which are found nowhere else in the world.
