Parrot Jungle amusement park first opened on 20 acres of coral rock and hammock land on
December 20, 1936 - a creation of Austrian Franz Scherr. The original park featured
25 Macaws flying free in a sub-tropical jungle setting. Today it is home to over 3,000 animals representing
some 110 species and over 2,000 varieties of flora and fauna. These exotic birds still fly free every day.
Since its first day over 14 million visitors have passed through Parrot Jungle & Gardens to
marvel at the abundance of flowers, hundred year old banyans and awe-inspiring exotic birds and
animals. The attraction is best known for the fascinating antics of its trained parrots, cockatoos,
and macaws. It is also recognized as one of the world's premiere bird sanctuaries, wildlife habitats
and botanical gardens.
Beginning in 2000 they began to build a completely new park Parrot Jungle Island.
This new park is located between the scenic skyline of Downtown Miami and the
South Beach Art Deco District.
This 18 acre theme park, which includes two acres of the surrounding Biscayne Bay is built from scratch.
The park is on an 86 acre man-made island, Watson Island, that was created from the fill dredged from the ship channels at the adjacent Port of Miami early in the past century.
The setting for this theme park is a lush tropical paradise of cascading waterfalls, winding streams,
Caribbean flamingos, baby orangutangs and alligators. Visitors enjoy the nonstop entertainment and
educational shows featuring trained birds, indigenous Florida Wildlife and
other exotic creatures.

During school break, children can learn about the animals we have here at the park as well as conservation issues around the world.
They will interact with our primates, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and of course, our parrots and many other species of birds.
The program will consist of a variety of hands-on animal encounters as well as arts & crafts projects, educational information sessions and park shows every day!
