Carnivals and Holidays

• Mardi GrasOfficially the last day before the fasting season of Lent. French name for Shrove Tuesday. Huge carnivals are held in some cities lasting a week or more before Mardi Gras itself. The most notable are in New Orleans, Rio de Janeiro, Nice and Cologne.
• May DayMajor Russian holiday (May 1st).
• Memorial Day US holiday observed last Monday in May. Instituted in 1868 to honor civil war dead.
• Independence Day US holiday since the 1776 Declaration of Indenpendence in the US Revolutionary War.

Religious Holidays and Events

• Jubilee 2000 - Catholics in Rome will have major celebrations to commerate the millenial jubilee. Expect giant crowds and no vacancy unless you make your reservations very early.
• Christmas -[Christ's Mass] Feast for the nativity of Jesus Chirst - Dec. 25th.
• Easter - Most sacred feast day of Christianity commerating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Celebrated by the Greek Orthodox Church on a date later than the traditional date used by Western Christian churches.
• Thanksgiving U.S. Christian day of thanks. Celebrated on fourth thursday in November.
• All Saints Day Nov. 1st - Feast day of Roman Catholic and Anglican churches. Halloween - "All Hallows Eve" - preceeds this day.
