Animal Science Merit BadgeAnimal Science Merit Badge Animal Science Merit Badge

Camp Horseshoe Bend offers all of the standard program areas found at camps throughout the country but prides itself on its horse program, offering trail rides through the surrounding countryside three to five times per day. It's one of a small number of camps that offers both Horsemanship and Animal Science merit badges, and that, in part, is the attraction of this camp.

Core elements of the Animal Science Merit Badge Program is to learn the basics of taking care of large animals, touring farm facilities and to have a hands-on experience with large farm animals.

    Western Theme Scout Camp

At Walter Scout Camp at Horseshoe Bend, life is a little more laid back, as in the days of the Old West. Transportation is a little different from city life, with over 40 horses from which to choose. Scouts may encounter many cowboys who will always greet you with a friendly "Howdy."

The stockade offers room for horseshoe playing, branding demonstrations, and room for Scoutmasters and Scouts to gather to watch the weekly presentation of Follow Me, Boys. Scoutmasters Cook-Off features an exceptional array of unique dutch oven desserts.

Sam Houston Area Council operates two major scouting summer camps on its giant El Rancho Cima. But those two camps are totally separate and the activities as different as night and day. Whereas Camp Horseshoe Bend is all about horses, animals and the wild west, Cockrell River Camp is everthing in the water.

    Rough Riders Hi-Adventure Tour

The Rough Riders program has been designed for older Scouts (13+), coed Venture crew members and adult leaders for premier High Adventure Bases such as Philmont, Boundary Waters, and Florida Sea Base. The program is located at Walter Horseshoe Bend Summer Camp.

Rugged Overnighters - Camp Horseshoe Bend

Do Something Different On This Scout Overniter!

A popular new trend in scouting is The Rugged-O. This is an overnight event where the scouts hike into a primitive campsite with the bare minimum of equipment (typically just a sleeping bag and pillow). Another twist on this activity is Bikepacking, where the scout patrol mountain bikes with their sleeping gear to a remote campsite. Contact the Campmaster for info about Rugged-O opportunities at Camp Horseshoe Bend.
