Many sightseeing attractions in Utah are a reflection of Mormon culture. Mormon pioneers originally settled Utah in the mid-19th century to escape religious persecution.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) was founded in 1830. The main body of Mormon pioneers, led by Brigham Young, migrated to the barren desert lands of Utah in 1847 after years of persecution in the Missouri and Illinois.

It has been nicknamed the Mormon Church for its belief in the Book of Mormon as additional scripture testifying to the divinity of Jesus Christ. It is also unique for its strong emphasis on the role of family in society and its reliance on a large body of lay leadership instead of a professional clergy.

Utah applied for statehood as early as 1849, but the request was not granted 1896 when the LDS Church had abolished its practice of polygamy. Today there are over 1.1 million Mormons (about 50% of the total state population) in Utah.
