Zion is famous for its bright red-orange sandstone canyons that merge in shades of white, purple, pink, yellow to create some of the most brilliantly colored rockface in the world. Here the Virgin River has cut through a high plateau to create a geological marvel.

Zion National Park was established in 1919 and is a 147,035 acre preserve. The fossils and sendiments exposed tell the geological history of Mesozoic Period - halfway between the ancient history of the Grand Canyon and the more recent Juriassic Period of the Bryce Canyon.

As recently as 1976 and incredible discovery was made in the park when a population of minute snails was discovered in a park spring. With a population between 10,000 to 15,000, these snails comprise a distinct species that is believed to have survived over 10 million years.

Another marvel of Zion is its "hanging gardens" where the cliffsides come alive during spring and summer in an array of columbine, shooting-star, cardinal flower and other beautiful blossoms. One of the most unique is the sacred datura which grows along the canyon. Reaching a height of over two feet with a large white trumpet blossom that opens in evening and wilts in the morning.
