This historic house museum, 535-acre working farm, and performing arts site is located in Albermarle County, Virginia. President James Monroe and his wife owned Ash Lawn-Highland from 1793 to 1826 and made it their official residence from 1799 to 1823.

James Monroe's "place of comfort and hospitality" is the scene of meetings, parties, picnics, a summer music festival, and a variety of educational and special events. It continues to provide an authentic view of nineteenth-century life for our many other visitors through examples of early American and Victorian architecture, decorative arts from those periods, and craft demonstrations on the grounds.

• Twice served as Minister to France, once to Britain and to Spain. Monroe's greatest achievement as a diplomat was the final negotiation of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.
• Served four one-year terms as Governor of Virginia
• 1808-1816Served as President James Madison's Secretary of State and Secretary of War during the War of 1812.

  Elected Fifth President of the United States for two terms (1816-1824) with the following highlights was characterized as the "Era of Good Feelings":

  • Resolved long-standing grievances with the British
  • 1819 - Acquired Florida from the Spanish
  • Panic of 1819 and subsequent economic depression
  • 1819 - Missouri submits request for statehood leads to two years of bitter Congressional debates that finally lead to the Missouri Compromise in 1821.
  • 1823 - Proclaimed the Monroe Doctrine prohibiting further European colonization in the Americas.
  • Monroe supported the American Colonization Society, which established the nation of Liberia for freed blacks. blacks. Its capital was named Monrovia in his honor.
