Overview
The University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, one of the nation's top-ranked universities, was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson, former US president and Virginia governor. March 1825, the University of Virginia opened to serve its first 123 students.
Thomas Jefferson was a living legacy among University students and faculty. Each Sunday, he hosted students for dinner at Monticello. Among those students was Edgar Allan POE, a University student in 1826. Jefferson died July 4, 1926.
By the late 1850s, the University was the "pride of Virginia" and the "head of Southern colleges." Courses in engineering had been added to those in liberal arts, medicine, and law, available from the beginning.

Pavilions - Jefferson vision of the college experience was an "academical village," a place where shared learning infused daily life.
He developed plans for ten such Pavilions-stately faculty homes with living quarters and classrooms.
Each Pavilion was identified with a subject to be studied and inhabited by the professor who taught that subject.
The Rotunda - At the head of the common area was the Rotunda, housing the main library.
Jefferson's design for the Rotunda echoed the design of the Pantheon in Rome.
The Rotunda was destroyed by a major fire in 1895 and subsequently rebuilt.
McConnell Memorial - 2,500 students, faculty, and alumni served in World War I. Eighty lost their lives, including a much-admired student leader,
James Rogers McConnell, shot down in his Lafayette Escadrille plane over France in 1917 and memorialized by the winged statue standing near Alderman Library today.
University Chapel - Completed in 1889, no longer used for regular services, it is a frequent venue for weddings
and memorial services.
Scott Stadium - Home field for the UVA Virginia Cavaliers football team.
The stadium finished an expansion in 2000 so that it can now seat over 61,500 fans.
Klocker Stadium - Home field for soccer and lacrosse, seats 7,000.
University Hall - 8,400 seat basketball arena.
UVA Medical Center - Recognized as one of the nation's top 100 hospitals.
The Corner - Popular gathering place for students and faculty since the late 1800's -
it is a collection of trendy restaurants, cafes, boutiques and nightlife.

progress of culture through the ages. The museum features numerous temporary exhibitions each year.
