Waynesboro, located in Augusta County, dates back to a land grant conferred to William Beverley in 1736 by King George II. Beverley transferred 465 acres of his land to Joseph Tees who operated Tees Tavern, and around which the village of Teesville was formed. In 1797 the name of the town was changed to Waynesboro in honor of the dashing colonial officer "Mad" Anthony Wayne. Legend has it that Wayne fought a battle with the Indians here, but historians have since disproved the story.
Waynesboro was also the scene of a major civil war battle when in 1865 and engagement ensued between Generals Jubal Early and Philip Sheridan.
