Stratford College - Danville
Closed in August 1974 after struggling to raise enough money to reopen for the fall term.
In the late 1960's, Stratford College made the cover of TIME magazine with the cover title, "The Renaissance Woman."
A unique school that attracted students from all over the world, Stratford offered a wonderful liberal arts education with a small teacher/student ratio.
All of her students enjoyed the close knit environment and the lovely campus. Stratford may be closed but her spirit lives on.
Her colors were blue and white and her motto was "ever striving to the stars." Her school flower was the Stratford Iris.
"Wreck of the Old 97" - Historic Marker
Historical marker on US58W outside of town marks the railroad accident that inspired
the popular ballad Wreck of the Old 97 that occured here on Sept 27, 1903 and killed nine people.
Millionaires Row - Historic District
Series of Edwardian and Victorian mansions along Main Street reflect Danville's prosperous tobacco and
textile heritage. A few of the opens are opened to the public during the Christmas Walking Tour
in the second Sunday of December.
Lady Astor House - 117 Broad St, Birthplace of Britains first female parliament member (1879).
Dan River Textile Mill
Largest single unit textile mill in the world. Visit their factory outlet store for their line
of bed and bath linens.
Danville's history and economy is connected to the large tobacco warehouses, which it make one of the largest tobacco auction centers in the nation. Today there are six large warehouses with over one million sq ft of floor space. Visitors are welcome to watch the auctions which usually occur between August and November.
Neal's Warehouse
In 1858, this was the site of the first public auction for piles of tobacco leaves.
Imperial Tobacco Building
501 Craghead Street, Danville, VA
The Imperial Tobacco Building spans Craghead Street for 445' and runs 155' back alnog Newton and Colquhoun Strets to the Southern Railroad spur.
The building consists of two five-story factories constructed in the late 19th century which serve as anchors to the two and three-story structures between them.
JH Crosby Building
502 Craghead St, Danville, VA
The newly established firm of J.H. Crosby and Bros. constructed a plug and twist tobacco factory in 1880.
The 4-story L-shaped factory fronted on Craghead Street 75' and 85' on Newton Street. Tobacco was steam-dryed and sweetened with licorice on the 2nd and 3rd floors in the rear of the building.
Continental Tobacco Company

In 1899, the Continental Tobacco Company erected a large 3-story brick prizery (200' x 85') on Lynn Street for the rehandling of tobacco purchased on the Danville market.
American Tobacco Company
618 Craghead St, Danville, VA
R. B. Graham, a Danville contractor, built the Harris Building for the American Tobacco Company in the early 1900's.
The 3-story brick rehandling and redrying plant (65'x100') afforded the maximum in fire protection available at the time using mill construction and automatic sprinklers.
The plant contained a receiving room on the 1st floor, hanging and prizing rooms on the 2nd and 2 dryers on the 3rd floor.

An 1899 train depot has been converted into a hands-on childrens museum
with interactive exhibits and special events.

There are also a number of civil war battle sites here, since Danville also served as the last capital of Jefferson Davis' Confederate Civil War administration before their surrender.
After the evacuation of Richmond on April 3, 1865 by Jefferson Davis and his cabinet, they came here. During the Civil War, Danville had a Confederate quartermaster depot, a hospital, and a prison camp.

Italianate mansion built in 1857 by tobacco magnate Maj. William Sutherlin, the museum
contains many of the orginal period furnishings and changing art exhibits.
Winter Civil War Encampment - 3rd Weekend of February -
This is an event portraying the life of Confederate soldiers during the winter months. This will be the fourth
year that this event has taken place. The "Danville Grays", Company B, 18th Virginia Infantry is the host
unit for the event. Members of other units are regular supporters. The weekend will include medical, tactics and firing demonstrations.
