| MainTour Shenandoah Valley Vacation Adventure |
The City's first family, the Harrisons, were late seventeenth-century English immigrants who entered the continent by way of New York. Enchanted by the beauty and richness of the great valley of the Shenandoah River, they settled in its heartland in 1737.
During the Civil War both northern and southern troops passed through Harrisonburg. Its schools and private homes served as hospitals. On June 20, 1862 the fence around the courthouse served as a stockade for Union prisoners taken at the Battle of Cross Keys.
