Originally a home owned by Wilmer McLean, this landmark was made famous on April 9, 1865, when the trapped confederate forces led by Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to the union armies led by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. Markers denote the sites of the headquarters tents of the two generals, the sites of the last cannon fire and the road where the confederates laid down their arms.

The orginal building burned in 1892 and subsequently razed the following year. The village of Appomattox was been restored to its original 1865 appearence with 27 period buildings.

The reconstructed courthouse serves as visitors center and museum. The auditorium features an audio-visual presentation every 30 minutes. Living history programs are presented during the summer by costumed performers portraying soldiers from each side.
