Newport News Shipyard
The largest non-government-owned shipyard in the United States, as measured by each of revenues, size of facilities,
and number of employees. Its primary business is the design, construction, repair, overhaul and refueling of
nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines for the US Navy.
The company is currently the only shipyard building the Navy's nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, the only
non-government-owned shipyard refueling and overhauling the Navy's nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, and
one of only two shipyards building nuclear-powered submarines. Since its inception in 1886, the Company
has developed a preeminent reputation through the construction of 264 naval ships and 543 commercial vessels.

James River Bridge Fishing Pier
At 9/10 of a mile, this is one of the longest fishing piers on the East Coast.
Croaker and spot are caught year-round, while striped bass, flounder, grey trout and red drum are caught seasonally.

Endview Plantation

Built 1769, Endview Plantation was used by General Thomas Nelson's Virginia Militia as a resting place on
September 28, 1781 en route to Yorktown. It was the prewar home of Captain Humphrey Harwood Curtis,
Captain of the Warwick Beaureguards, a company of the 32nd Virginia Infantry Regiment.
During the 1862 Peninsula Campaign, the house at Endview was used as a field hospital by both Confederate and
Union troops. Around May 5, 1862, the house was used by Union General George B. McClellan as his
headquarters during the Battle of Williamsburg. The house is restored to it's 1862 appearance and is open for tours.
Often costumed interpreters guide tours and present special events throughout the year.
S.P.C.A. Petting Zoo

Newsome House Museum & Cultural Center

Historic Victorian (1899) home of J. Thomas Newsome, prominent African-American attorney and civic leader.
A graduate of Howard University Law School, Newsome was one of the first African-American attorneys to
argue before the Virginia Supreme Court. Today, his elegant Queen Anne residence serves as a cultural center
and site of changing art exhibits, as well as a permanent exhibit on his life and times. Pre-scheduled tours.

This is definitely one of the best museums in all of Virginia! Exhibits and galleries tells of man's heritage on the seas. This facility has an alliance with the South Street Seaport Museum in New York City that allows for them to share exhibits. Collections range from the Age of Exploration to the modern navy and consists of over 34,000 artifacts / displays and a library with over 600,000 photographic prints. There is also an impressive collection of ornate (and sometimes huge) ship's mastheads.
A large collection of nautical gear helps to round out the collection. This includes figureheads, nautical instruments, wespons, ceramics and textiles. The collections are set against an endless array of the best marine paintings by highly acclaimed international artists. The museum is a special repository for many artifacts retrieved from the USS Monitor and RMS Titanic.
Age of Exploration Gallery - chronicles
scientific and technological developments in shipbuilding, navigations and cartography
that enable early European explorer's to cross the oceans. Many
rare artifacts and hand-on exhibits.
Defending the Seas - History of the
U.S. Navy includes re-creation of sections of warships such as an
aircraft carrier deck and the turret on the iron-clad USS Monitor.
Five sections each cover an important piece of American naval history.
Chesapeake Bay Gallery - Explore the culture of the
watermen of Chesapeake Bay.
Crabtree Collection of Miniature Ships - Very authentic
hand-carved scale models by August Crabtree, some are so small they can
only be seen with a magnifying glass.
Great Hall of Steam - Exhibits focus on the story of
oceangoing commercial steamship development. The gallery has exhibits about the
Titanic and the battle between the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia

renowned naval architect William Francis Gibbs, designer of the superliner

Ship Models Gallery - Samples include shipbuilder's half model,

with picnic area, 5-mile walking trail and fishing lake. Propellers
