Brown's Island
The island is terminus of the scenic Canal Walk in downtown
Richmond. The island has a heliport, a collection of sculptures
and hosts a venue of evening summer concerts.
Canal Walk
Beginning south of the capitol at 12th and Main sts, this path
follows the locks of the James River-Kanawha Canal proposed by
George Washington help ships bypass the James River Falls. The path
continues over a footbridge to Brown's Island (above), across from

As part of the Richmond National Battlefield Park are following major landmarks:
Chimborazo Visitor Center -
Museum located at 3215 E. Broad St. Exhibits and memorial to the
massive Confederate Chimborazo Hospital complex built here in 1861 and
that treated more than 76,000 patients during the Civil War.
Tredegar Iron Works Visitor Center -
Visitor center at Fifth and Tredegar streets on the Richmond Canal Walk.
Cold Harbor Visitors Center -
Exhibits about the battle, electronic battlefield map and one mile nature trail.
Here on June 3, 1864, General U.S. Grant launched his army at heavily
fortified Confederate positions with huge loss.
Drewry's Bluff (Fort Darling> - Major Confederate Fort.
Glendale National Cemetery Visitor Center -
Exhibits and electronic battle map for the adjacent Glendale and Malvern Hill
battles of the 1862 McClellan's Seven Days Campaign.
Fort Harrison Visitors Center -
Major Confederate fort and battleground. On Sept. 29, 1864, a dawn assualt by
3000 troops captured Fort Harrison. Battlefield nature trail.

Name derived from the holly trees growing here. A granite pyramid
honors 18,000 buried Confederate soldiers.
Final burial place for many prominent Virginian citizens including:
Museum of the Confederacy

Free validated parking in the adjacent hospital garage parking lot.
Founded in 1890, this museum has today the largest collection of
Civil War artifacts, paintings and documents. Over 15,000 items of
military equipment and clothing includes personal effects of major
Confederate leaders. Large black history collection documents lives
of both free enslaved African-Americans during the war. Another
exhibits has over 500 flags from the Confederate armed forces and government.
White House of the Confederacy

Located adjacent to the Museum of the Confederacy (above).
Executive mansion for President Jefferson Davis and his family during
the Civil War. Originally a brick house built in 1818, it has been restored with many of its original
furnishings to its Victorian opulence. Eleven period rooms are on exhibit.
Despite its name, it has always been painted gray.

Beth Ahabab Museum & Archives

Virginia's museum of Jewish history and culture. Exhibits and
memorabilia from one of the oldest Jewish congregations in America.
Archives may be used for genealogical research.
Edgar Allan Poe Museum

Vast collection of memorabilia and artwork to honor Virginia's most famous poet (although a Richmond native
he never lived in this house) inside Richmond's oldest house The Old Stone House (built 1737).
Other displays and memorabilia depict life in early 19th century Richmond.
Federal Reserve Money Museum

Over 500 artifacts depicting the history of money. Includes some of the
oldest coins in the world. Special exhibits on colonial and U.S. Money.

Home to the official records of the Commonwealth of Virginia from
its founding as a colony to the present. Many historical exhibits
supplement a vast collection of books, manuscripts, maps and artwork.
Science Museum of Virginia

Converted 1919 train station hold over 250 hands-on exhibits,
demonstrations and displays.
Ethyl IMAX Dome and Planetarium -
IMAX films and multimedia planetarium shows on a five-story, 76-foot
diameter domed screen. Show times vary, phone ahead.

St. John's Episcopal Church

Erected in 1741, this site is famous as the place where Patrick
Henry delivered his "Liberty or Death" speech in favor of independence.
Every Sunday at 2PM, there is an re-enactment of the Second Virginia
Convention (Memorial Day thru Labor Day).
St. Paul's Episcopal Church

Place where President Jefferson Davis and Gen. Robert E. Lee worshipped
and since then this place has been referred to as the Church of the Confederacy.
Today, nearly everything inside is a memorial. Built 1845.

Virginia State Capitol - Designed by
Thomas Jefferson and completed in 1788 (wings added in 1906). This building
housed both the Virginia General Assembly and the Confederate Congress.
Washington Monument - Crawford equestrian statue
surrounded by figures of Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, John Marshall,
Andrew Lewis and Gen. Thomas Nelson Jr. Additional figures located closeby.
Old Bell Tower - originally used to signal fires, raids
and other town news, now has a visitor center located inside.
Executive Mansion - official residence of Virginia
governors since 1813.
Old City Hall - 1894 Victorian Gothic building with
three-story painted cast iron lobby now used as an office building.
New City Hall - Located across from
Capitol Square at 9th and Broad sts, it has an 19th floor observation deck.
