Great nearby recreational activities include famous ski resorts, fishing, whitewater rafting, hunting, sightseeing at national parks, hiking, biking, snowmobiling and horseback riding. There are over 1,000 miles of safe, well-marked backcountry trails in the park. Many ranger/naturalist conducted hikes help you to enjoy these. Yellowstone is the first designated and second largest park in the national park system. Over 2.2 million acres were set aside on March 1, 1872. Nearby are Grand Teton Nat'l Park, Jackson Hole and Bridger-Teton National Forest. We recommend putting serious forethought into any preparation for a Yellowstone vacation. Nearly 70 percent of the park's visitors come during July and August when park facilities are hardpressed. Allow three to five days to tour the park. Principal park roads are usually open from early May through October, depending on weather conditions.

There are over 1,000 miles of safe, well-marked backcountry trails in the park. Many ranger/naturalist conducted hikes help you to enjoy these. A couple of the easiest trails are Storm Point Walk at Fishing Bridge and Clear Lake Walk in the Grand Canyon area. There are many areas designated for boating, fishing and backcountry camping. Fishing permits (free) are mandatory to show that you are aware of all rules and restrictions.
Many campgrounds are located both inside the park and immediately outside on forest service land. We recommend planning ahead for the peak summer months. Check the listings for Bridger-Teton, Shoshone, Targhee and Gallatin National Forests which all encompass Yellowstone.
Newly popular is visiting the park in wintertime. However only the entrances through Mammoth Hot Springs, Cooke City and Flagg Ranch are open. Snowmobiling is allowed on unplowed roads in the park. Park snow coaches make regular trips from these sites upto tour Old Faithful. Old Faithful Visitor Center is starting point for ski and snowshoe treks the follow Geyser Hill Loop. All unplowed roads are available for cross-country ski and snowshoe treks.
